Ranveer Singh breaks his silence about Shahid Kapoor joining ‘Padmavati’

The past couple of months have seen a lot been written about Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming magnum opus — 'Padmavati', which stars Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. While the shooting has commenced after months of preparations, the movie has been plagued by rumours of Ranveer's uneasiness at sharing screen space with Shahid, delays in production and escalating costs.
Speaking to a daily, Ranveer has finally cleared the air. He said, "At the beginning of the year, Mr Bhansali spoke to me about the film, saying, 'I want to make Padmavati with you.' I thought it was going to be a beauty versus the beast or the heroine versus an anti-hero kind of a story. I was very excited and committed to it. Then, I went to shoot 'Befikre', while the scripting for 'Padmavati' was on. When I came back and read the script, there was a prominent third part. I told him what I thought about the script. As a policy, I never get into the casting decisions of any character of a film, unless my opinion or suggestion is asked for. We had that discussion and I clearly, told him, 'We should get the best possible actor to play this part.' And I am very excited about Shahid coming on board. I think he's a brilliant actor and an amazing inclusion to our team. He will add immense value."
Addressing rumors that he was uncomfortable about sharing screen space with Shahid and wanting to opt out of the film, he says, "I committed to the film even before the script was ready. I was always going to do this film, regardless of who was cast as Padmavati or Rawal Ratan Singh. It's a very conscious decision to do a part that is challenging and completely out of my comfort zone. I knew that it would be a maverick move and could be a risk. But, I listened to my instincts and went ahead with it. There's no question of opting out. I always wanted to do something different; I was always interested in doing an anti-hero part, and who better to do it with than Mr Bhansali. I think the way the film has been set up, it makes for spicy stories, where people assume there's friction between actors. But, at one point, I was like, 'This is getting out of hand and as the leading man of the film, I need to take the responsibility and initiative to make sure that everything is okay'. So, I called everyone and said, 'Let's meet'. We all got together and I was very happy to see that we gelled well. Shahid joining the team is a blessing and I was happy to see that we are all on the same page, and we could have a laugh about all the absurd stories."
So, what about rumours that claim that he doesn't get along with Shahid? "The only report that was true is that we work out in the same gym and enjoy each other's company. I have always had a warm and affectionate equation with him. I have tremendous amount of respect and admiration for his work and him as an actor. I have been watching his films even before I got into the industry and excited to be collaborating with him. Also, I am no one to ask a filmmaker to give another actor a certain billing or to alter the script. Having said that, the script is phenomenal and should be shot the way it is. I just stick to my job, which is acting. Things like posters, publicity material and promotions are entirely the filmmaker's prerogative. I don't get into all of that."

Mira Nair To Do Stage Adaptation Of Monsoon Wedding
After having reached dizzying heights in Bollywood, filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj is now all set to get started with his first English composition, which happens to be a whopping 11 songs for the musical stage adaptation of Mira Nair's film Monsoon Wedding. He is said to have kept all other assignments on hold next month for this Broadway-styled musical, which will see him working with lyricist Jaideep Sahni and Nair in December.
News is that since Mira got busy with The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Vishal with Saat Khoon Maaf and Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola, the idea of converting Monsoon Wedding into a Bollywood musical got delayed. Talking about the musical, Mira said that she will be working on finishing the songs of Monsoon Wedding until mid-December. If the buzz is to be believed, then the shocker comes in the form of the news that Mira wants to cast fresh faces in the musical and that none of the film cast will be repeated. And the criteria for the stage act will be that the said actors have to be fabulous dancers since they will be singing and dancing non-stop on stage for two hours.
Meanwhile, Bhardwaj said that the stage adaptation of Monsoon Wedding will be like a Broadway musical version. He added that for the first time, he will be composing the songs in English, which will be sung live by the actors on stage.

Reema Kagti, Sanjay Gupta Engage In War Of Words
There seems to have been a war of words taking place between filmmakers Reema Kagti and Sanjay Gupta. In an interview to a newspaper, Reema accused Sanjay Gupta of starting the allegations that Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (which was co-written by Reema and Zoya Akhtar) is a copy of a foreign film. She further went on to add that Gupta had not made a single original film in his career and hence had no right to talk about originality.
Not one to take things lying down, Sanjay Gupta lambasted Reema on Twitter. Gupta tweeted, "Poor Reema Kagti, is desperate to create buzz for her thanda film. If using my name helps, so be it. Ms. Kagti you've paid lakhs to the paper to publicize your film and yet it's me they highlight. No highlights in your film to talk about? Ms. Kagti why were you quiet at the time this controversy came out? Was it because you didn't want to hamper your award season? Ms. Kagti if I've been inspired I have openly admitted and not hidden behind a curtain of fake originality. Ms. Kagti most of the films I've made have gotten 4 star ratings. But if not original I don't shamelessly lobby and clamor for awards. And finally, Ms. Kagti I am available whenever you ask to debate the originality of ZNMD on an open stage."
Well, if this battle of words will end here or turn into a big controversy is something that only time will tell.

Pran Saheb Is Fine - Amitabh Bachan
Ever since veteran actor Pran was hospitalized earlier this week, there were rumours that he is critical. However one of the first people to dismiss those rumour mongers was Amitabh Bachchan.
Big B, who has acted with Pran in many iconic films, visited the ailing actor and tweeted, "Paid a visit to Pran Saheb in hospital. He is fine. Spent an hour with him joking and talking of times past and present. All those making speculative remarks on Pran Saheb being critical...Get your facts right before going public... most irresponsible"
On his blog Bachchan further spoke about the greatness of Pran and reminisced old times by writing, "A true professional, an earnest colleague, a gentleman and in possession of an elephants memory on some of the most incredible 'shairi' of the times gone by. Irrespective of the heavy makeup that he wore on most of his films - the heavy false beards and wigs interpreting various characters that he played - he was always the first on set and never left it to get back to his room. He would sit quietly after his shot was over, in the heat of the studio, with gentle demeanor, throughout the shift, leaving only after the 'pack up' sound. His innovations in designing different characters for himself and spending hours in getting those hair and sticky pieces together was absolutely amazing. On outdoor schedules, he was a delight to spend time with - his daily evening drink and his numerous anecdotes and knowledge of urdu poetry. This evening too he is filled with those numbers and at 92, god bless him, has not lost any of his sense of humour and humility."

Akshay Kumar Celebrates Rowdy Rathore Anniversary With Boss
When something starts working for them, expect our Bollywood superstars to be sticking to the winning formula. Akshay Kumar has done exactly that for his upcoming film Boss. He has locked the film's arrival to be next summer and set the release date as June 7. Incidentally, this would be exactly a year after Rowdy Rathore which enjoyed a massive response when it released on 1st June this year.
"In the times when release dates are becoming more and more precious with every passing year, every superstar worth his salt is keen on blocking a date for him on a yearly basis. While the fight has so far been centered on festive occasions, there are other important dates available only on premium. Akshay feels that 1st week of June is good for an action entertainer of his to release and since the summer season is considered to be one of the most lucrative for Bollywood, he has chosen June 7 for bringing his Boss. This way, the film would also mark one year anniversary of Rowdy Rathore", informs a source.
Given the fact that Boss, which is being directed by Anthony D'Souza, has just gone on floors, a deadline being set for other cast members and crew means the film has to be completed in quick time.
"That's the way Akshay works", says a close associate, "Since he releases an average of three to four films a year, he can't afford to drag his films beyond a certain point. He starts 2013 with Special Chabbis while his big ticket film Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 is already confirmed for August 8 release. His Boss had to arrive in between and what better date than to arrive exactly a year after Rowdy Rathore."
Moreover, with Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer Ghanchakkar being the only other confirmed release in June, Akshay's Boss is pretty much expected to rule like one on its arrival next year.

Ponty Chadha's Last Appointment With Bollywood
A major blow to Bollywood is the death of liquor baron and film distributor Ponty Chadha. Many movie producers and directors worked closely with Chadha in the past. At least 6-7 prominent filmmakers were in serious negotiations with Chadha over big-budget projects which would now have to seek a different outlet for financial sustenance.
Apparently, Bollywood financier Bharat Shah was the last person from the Hindi film industry to have negotiated with Ponty Chadha. Bharat Shah has major financial stakes in director Anand Kumar's Sanjay Dutt-Arshad Warsi-Vivek Oberoi production Zilla Ghazibad.
Shah was to fly Delhi on Saturday, the day tragedy struck Ponty Chadha's life, to screen the film for Chadha who showed a keen interest in the distribution of the film.
Barely an hour before Ponty was to view Zilla Ghaziabad, he was shot dead.
Confirming this, the Zilla Ghaziabad producer Vinod Bachchan says, "Bharatbhai is closely involved with my film. He was in serious negotiation with Ponty Chadhaji for the worldwide distribution of our film. On Friday evening at around 7 pm Bharatbhai spoke to Ponty Chadhaji about screening our film for his viewing. On Saturday morning our representatives flew into Delhi with the film. Our appointment was at 4 pm. Our representatives were waiting at his office for Pontyji when the shocking news came at 3.30 pm."
Bachchan says Ponty Chadha's death is a serious setback not just for his film but to entire film industry. "It's a big blow for our film Zilla Ghaziabad but also for the film industry. Pontyji was closely associated with many big projects involving huge financial stakes. It would be really difficult to find someone to replace his high level of financial commitment to our films."

Son Of Sardaar: How The Film Has Become A Hit Despite Criticism
‘Son of Sardaar’ is minting money at the box office
despite receiving poor reviews from the critics. As per trade analyst
Taran Adarsh, the film collected Rs 26.93 crore in first two days. The
film is expected to continue its good run at the ticket window for some
more days and that is likely to turn it into a hit film, but this
situation gives birth to a question that what exactly is making ‘Son of
Sardaar’ a cash magnet?
‘Son of Sardaar’ did not lose the first battle of publicity
against ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ and that paid back the film in a good way.
Firstly, it gained the faith of the public that the film could be good
because they are not bowing down against a bigger film.
Secondly, the legal between Ajay Devgn Films and Yash Raj Films got ‘Son of Sardaar’ the much needed attention.
The film released on Diwali and due to the fact that there were only
two films, ‘Son of Sardaar’ received its share. If reports are to be
believed then ‘Son of Sardaar’ released in 2000 screens against 2500
screens of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, which was more or less a fair screen
sharing. It fetched the audience’s attention towards the alternate of
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’.
The credibility earned by Ajay Devgn in last couple of years is
also an important factor. ‘Golmaal series’, ‘Singham’ and ‘Bol Bachchan’
have brought him in the big league, and people have started to find him
an actor capable of providing ‘entertainment’. His association with
Rohit Shetty has produced some successful comedies in the recent past
and ‘Son of Sardaar’ looked similar to Rohit Shetty’s films in promos,
this probably enticed the spectators.
It seems the Indian audience views films primarily as a mode of
entertainment. The trend has gained more currency in recent times with
stylish films making a mark at the box office, ‘Son of Sardaar’ fits
into this category.
‘Son of Sardaar’ has all the basic ingredients of a commercially
successful Bollywood film including a good star-cast, hit songs and a
huge canvas.
Further, India has a tradition of accepting slapstick comedies.
‘Son of Sardaar’ is cleaner than many of the ‘so called’ comedy films
which possibly invited the family audiences.
Together all these reasons were capable enough to pave the way for its initial success.
Yash Chopra The King Of Romance Dies At 80
His death Sunday came weeks before the release of “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”,
which he had announced would be his last directorial venture. The
romantic saga is coming out Nov 13, but he will not be around to see it.
Chopra,
who turned 80 Sep 27, was born in Lahore in 1932 and eventually came to
Mumbai after Partition. In an interview some days before he was
hospitalised with dengue, Chopra told Shah Rukh: “My mother said do what
your heart says. She gave me Rs.200 and said my blessings are with you.
Go ahead and don’t worry.”
He also said whatever he was because
of his late brother and filmmaker B.R. Chopra, whom he assisted at the
beginning of his Bollywood career.
“I’m sitting here just because of B.R. Chopra and no one else. I wanted to fly on my own wings,” he said in that interview.
He
admitted that it was not easy to start Yash Raj Films, his production
house that has been delivering blockbuster hits, in 1971.
Yet,
Chopra was one of the few directors to make two superhit films
simultaneously – action drama “Deewar” (1975) and cross-generational
romance “Kabhi Kabhie” (1976) – both proved his versatility and his hold
on the pulse of audiences.
But, like all legendary directors, no one or two films can sum up Chopra’s achievements.
To
the world, Chopra was known as the ‘King of Romance’, a well-deserved
title after he created memorable love stories in “Daag”, “Kabhi Kabhie”,
“Silsila”, “Chandni”, “Dil To Pagal Hai”, and “Veer Zaara”. To keep up
with evolving audiences, he adapted new trends in each era and made most
glamorous and trendy romances.
Like others, he too went through a
bad patch after two of his films – “Faasle” (1985) and “Vijay” (1988) –
bombed one after the other at the box office.
But after facing the setbacks, Chopra triumphed again at the box office with “Chandni”.
“When
I was making ‘Vijay’, I was making films just to be successful and not
from my heart and I knew I was making the wrong kind of films. I decided
to make a hardcore romantic film with nine songs and this is how I
thought of ‘Chandni’ (1989),” he had said in an interview once.
He
went on to create a new-age romance for Gen Y with “Dil To Pagal Hai”
(1997), a sleek, urban, musical romantic saga that reaped gold at the
box office.
Then he made the cross-border romantic flick “Veer Zara” (2004) and was planing to hang up his boots after “Jab Tak Hai Jaan”.
In
his career, he won many awards, including the prestigious Dadasaheb
Phalke Award in 2001, six National Awards, 11 Filmfare Awards and was
conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2005.
Many of Chopra’s romances
used the beautiful alpine landscape of Switzerland. Chopra shot so many
times in Switzerland that a lake in the Alpenrausch, a favourite
shooting spot of his, has been christened Chopra Lake.
Not only
that, he became the first recipient of the title of Ambassador of
Interlaken, and a special Yash Chopra Suite and Yash Chopra Train were
inaugurated in his honour in Interlaken in 2011.
But Chopra’s
oeuvre was not limited to just romance and relationships. In his five
decade-long career, he experimented with all genres.
His first film “Dhool Ka Phool” in 1959 was the story of an illegitimate Hindu child being brought up by a Muslim.
His
next project, “Dharamputra” (1961) was another hard-hitting film on
communal conflict, and was one of the first films to depict the
Partition and Hindu fundamentalism. The film marked the debut of Shashi
Kapoor in a full-fledged role and won the National Award for Best
Feature Film in Hindi.
A precedent-setter, Chopra’s 1965
critically successful drama “Waqt” pioneered the concept of
multi-starters in Bollywood, while “Ittefaq” (1969) was a taut thriller,
being the first Hindi films which did not have any songs or an
interval.
Proving his versatility, Chopra on one hand directed
intense dramas “Deewar”, “Trishul”, and “Mashaal”, while on the other he
made family sagas like “Parampara” and thrillers – “Kala Patthar” and
“Darr”.
His movies were sometimes based on real life tragedies.
The Dec 27, 1975, accident in a coal mine in Chasnala near Dhanbad
inspired the multi-starrer intense drama, “Kaala Patthar” starring
Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Shashi Kapoor.
Chopra was
one of the few filmmakers who created a cult following for his actors —
Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi and Shah Rukh Khan – and gave audiences
evergreen songs.
