SAG Awards Analysis: 3 Things We Think We Know About The Oscar Race

SAG Awards Analysis: Three Things We Think We Know About The Oscar Race - ThePakiChat.Net
The Oscar race has cleared up over the past few days, with SAG and the BFCA announcing nominations for their respective awards programs (both considered dependable precursors for the Academy Awards). So while SAG threw more than a few curve balls our way in the various categories (um, Nicole Kidman?), there seem to be at least three things we can point to and say, “Yes, we know this to be true about the Oscar race.”
What, then, do we think we have learned?

1. We have four legitimate frontrunners for Best Picture

Four movies earned both BFCA nominations for Best Film and SAG nominations for Outstanding Cast (the equivalent of Best Film). They are “Argo,” “Lincoln,” “Les Miserables” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” I’m comfortable saying that all four of those will earn Best Picture Oscar nods.

Now, which films will join them? More specifically, how many more films will join them? Oscar still remains fluid in terms of the number of slots it wants to fill in Best Picture. If I had to guess which other films will get into the Oscar race, I’d put money down on “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Life of Pi” and “Django Unchained.” After that, it becomes a question of how many movies the Academy wants to honor. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” could get in, as could “The Master” or “The Impossible.” Those last few slots are anyone’s game at the moment.

2. There are wildcards at play in the acting categories

Several names we expect to see: Denzel Washington for “Flight;” Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln;” Jennifer Lawrence for “Silver Linings Playbook;” and Anne Hathaway for “Les Miserables.” Then there are the names that have surprised us at both SAG and the Critics’ Choice. Will they hold on to this momentum and earn Oscar nods?

Here are the names that somewhat shocked me: Ann Dowd. Javier Bardem (in both groups). Naoimi Watts (in both groups), who is VERY deserving for “The Impossible,” but I wasn’t sure enough voters had seen the film. Matthew McConaughey. Nicole Kidman! Almost all are deserving of Oscar love, yet some are going to have to be left out when the Academy nominates. Who will get in? We shall see.

3. Some films are dying. Others are dead.

“Cloud Atlas” is a stunning piece of film making. It does not appear to be an Oscar contender. Neither is Gus Van Sant’s “The Promised Land,” which made no waves over the past 48 hours. “Anna Karenina” was largely ignored by the voting bodies. “The Hobbit” is not getting any momentum. And while “The Master” earned a few nods, it is not the Oscar powerhouse many thought it would be back in September, when critics fawned.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' Synopsis Revealed

Star Trek Into Darkness @ ThePakiChat.Net
The promise of an "epic chess game" may not be the biggest sell for fans of explosive blockbuster action, but we're guessing in the case of Star Trek Into Darkness, the phrase might be more of a metaphor. Then again, they pulled it off in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Whether Captain Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise will be facing off in the classic board game, the other tantalizing teases made in the sequel's newly released official synopsis (below) are enough to leave this Searching for Bobby Fischer fan sufficiently stoked. Director J.J. Abrams retakes the captain's chair for Star Trek Into Darkness with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana all returning for another round of intergalactic adventuring. Benedict Cumberbatch joins the cast as a villain who has, miraculously in the age of paparazzi photos and Internet leaks, remained a mystery even after shooting has wrapped. The below synopsis is our first bit of info on what classic character (or new creation?) Cumberbatch will play in the film:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
So we beam it to you, Trekkers: does Cumberbatch's baddie, apparently "from within" Starfleet, remind you of any existing characters? Who will be the Black King to Kirk's White Bishop, and what is the personal grudge enveloping it all?
We'll find out when Star Trek Into Darkness arrives in theaters on May 17, 2013, or perhaps even sooner, when the movie gets its first tease on IMAX screens this December.
Arm the photon opinions and fire away.

Moonrise Kingdom Takes Top Prize At Gotham Awards

Moonrise Kingdom Movie, Suzy, Watch Online, Full Movie, Trailer, Gotham Awards@ ThePakiChat.Net
Skirting over the sheer absurdity in the fact that The Dark Knight Rises wasn't even nominated for any Gotham Awards (it takes place there, for Pete's sake!), this year's incarnation of the Independent Feature Project's ceremony for recognizing cinematic excellence offered up some pretty worthy victors. The 22nd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards took place Monday night with comedian and filmmaker Mike Birbiglia (Sleepwalk with Me) playing host. Snagging the coveted Best Feature title for the year of 2012 was the revered indie hit from community mainstay Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom.

The 1960s-set romantic comedy, focused on a pair of renegade preteens who whisk one another away from their respective scout troops and unfulfilling home lives, was nominated back in October alongside venerable candidates The Master, Bernie, The Loneliest Planet, and Middle of Nowhere. Anderson's spirited, offbeat flick (which boasts a cast of Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Bob Balaban, and two of Hollywood's most spectacular new assets, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward), took the top prize, contributing to buzz surrounding its potential for nods come Academy Award season.

Jaimie Alexander Opens Up About Horrific Injury Digg

Jamie Alexendar Injured, Wallpapers, Movies @ www.ThePakiChat.Net
The actress, who plays Lady Sif in Thor, was in the U.K. to shoot the superhero blockbuster's sequel when she ended up in hospital after a bad fall.

Taking to Twitter.com shortly after the accident, she tweeted, "I sustained a pretty horrible injury. I'm lucky I'm not paralyzed. Thank you (with all of my heart) to those who've looked after me."

The 28 year old was forced to sit out of production for weeks while recovering, and now Alexander admits the fall was far more serious than she initially let on.

Sh recalls, "It was raining, it was dark outside, it was, like, five in the morning - and I went down a metal staircase and slipped and slipped a disc in my thoracic spine and chipped 11 of my vertebra... I knocked my left shoulder out of place and tore my rhomboid (muscle) on my right side... It took me out of filming for a month."

But the beauty insists she is already on the mend, telling the New York Post, "I heal really fast. Everyone thinks it's really funny to tease me about staircases now that I fell down one... I'm walking in heels again though, so that's a good sign."

Peter Jackson Fires Back At Hobbit Animal Mistreatment Allegations

Peter Jackson Ciggerates, Drugs, Movies, Actor, Family, Wife, Kids, Childs @ www.ThePakiChat.Net
Activists at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wrote to the director over the weekend after four wranglers hired to help feed and groom the creatures reported abuses and incompetence that led to the deaths of three horses and several sheep, goats and chickens.

But an angry Jackson has blasted the allegations in a statement, which reads: "The producers of The Hobbit take the welfare of all animals very seriously and have always pursued the highest standard of care for animals in their charge.

"Any incidents that occurred that were brought to their attention as regards to this care were immediately investigated and appropriate action taken. This includes hundreds of thousands of dollars that were spent on upgrading housing and stable facilities in early 2011.

"The producers completely reject the accusations that 27 animals died due to mistreatment during the making of the films. Extraordinary measures were taken to make sure that animals were not used during action sequences or any other sequence that might create undue stress for the animals involved.

"Over 55 per cent of all shots using animals in The Hobbit are in fact computer generated; this includes horses, ponies, rabbits, hedgehogs, birds, deer, elk, mice, wild boars and wolves.

"The American Humane Association (AHA) was on hand to monitor all use of animals by the production. No animals died or were harmed on set during filming.

"We regret that some of these accusations by wranglers who were dismissed from the film over a year ago are only now being brought to our attention. We are currently investigating these new allegations and are attempting to speak with all parties involved to establish the truth."

Jackie Chan To Step Back From Action Movies

Jackie Chan Movies, Wallpapers, Family, Son, Daughter, Wife @ www.ThePakiChat.Net Hollywood News
The Kung Fu master will scale back on lead roles after the film premieres in China next month (Dec12), and he hopes to devote more time to charity work.

Chan plans to rely more on special effects technology in future big screen outings as he admits stunts have become increasingly difficult to perform as he approaches 60.

He tells Reuters, "I'm not young any more, honestly. Why (do) I have to use my own life to still do these kind of things? I will still do as much as I can. But I just don't want to risk my life to sit in a wheelchair, that's all."

However, the 58 year old is confident fans will love Chinese Zodiac, in which he plays a treasure hunter.

He adds, "I'm the director, I'm the writer, I'm the producer, I'm the action director, almost everything. This really, really is my baby. You know, I've been writing the script for seven years."

'Gossip Girl': Who ELSE Is Getting Married

Gossip Girl @ThePakiChat.Net News

Another spoiler-filled Gossip Girl photo is making the rounds today and it hints at another happy ending, this time for arguably the most on-again-off-again couple on this show. It looks like Lonely Boy Dan (Penn Badgley) and Serena (Blake Lively) will finally find their way back into each other’s arms by season’s end. And lest you think this is another one of their short-term relationships, take a peek at the spoiler-ific photo at left side.

In this pic, we see Serena and Dan… getting married? What the what?!? Could this be a dream, a PR stunt, or a fake-out of any kind?

No, my dear, skeptical Gossip Girl fans. Feast your eyes on the truth: Sources tell Hollywood.com that the wedding is real. Serena and Dan do get married. Added bonus scoop: They're also filming a "five years later" epilogue.

This latest bit of news comes right on the heels of two other big reveals about the final season of Gossip Girl. First, we found out that the identity of Gossip Girl will be revealed, and then this photo revealed that another UES couple, Blair and Chuck, are also on their way to the altar. With all of these crazy stories being spoiled, we can only wonder what even crazier stories are being kept under wraps.

The final season of Gossip Girl airs Mondays on the CW.

Megan Fox And Brian Austin Green Welcome Newborn Son

Megan Fox And Brian Austin Green Welcome Newborn Son @ThePakiChat.Net News

Now that's what we call a hot mama! Megan Fox, 26, and her husband Brian Austin Green, 39, welcomed their first child together, a boy named Noah Shannon Green, on September 27. Fox, who has kept the news within the family for the past few weeks, announced Noah's arrival on Wednesday on her Facebook page. She said,
"We have been very lucky to have had a peaceful few weeks at home, but I would like to release this myself before others do. I gave birth to our son Noah Shannon Green on September 27th. He is healthy, happy, and perfect.

We are humbled to have the opportunity to call ourselves the parents of this beautiful soul and I am forever grateful to God for allowing me to know this kind of boundless, immaculate love.

Thanks to those of you who wish to send your positive energy and well wishes. May God bless you and your families abundantly."
While this is Fox's first child of her own, she has helped raise Green's son Kassius, 10, since he was a toddler. She may have only become Kassius' step-mom when she married Green in 2010, but she has known him for much longer. Fox told Harper's Bazaar in 2010, “I am a stepmother to the fullest extent. I have looked after Kassius since he was 3 and he has no memory of life without me. For some reason, no one wants to look at me that way, but I am responsible [for him]. I’ve never struggled with that, from bedtime stories to the school run.”

According to Green, Fox has been a great step-mom for Kassius, and will make a great mother for Noah. He told Details, "She is absolutely my better half in parenting. She just gets it. It's instinctual for her. She loves my son, Kassius. And from the time we started dating—you know, she was 18—she stepped in and took control. It's unbelievable."

Amy Adams And Lee Daniels Join Janis Joplin Biopic Race

Amy Adams and Lee Daniels Join Janis Joplin Biopic Race @ThePakiChat.Net News

Competing biopics aren't rare in Hollywood. Truman Capote was all the rage in 2005 (with Philip Seymour Hoffman's Capote stealing the thunder from the Toby Jones-led Infamous), this Fall sees two Alfred Hitchcock films (Hitchcock and HBO's The Girl), the battle for pictures based on the life of porn star legend Linda Lovelace is in full swing.

Now we have another famous figure to add to the mix: Janis Joplin.

Rumors that Amy Adams would lead a Joplin biopic have been swirling about since 2010, but an announcement from The Hollywood Reporter solidifies her involvement as well as reports that Lee Daniels (Precious, The Paperboy) is attached to direct. Currently titled Get It While You Can, details are scarce on whether the biopic of the 1960s rocker would sweep her entire career or concentrate on a particular moment, but a script has been written and cameras could be rolling on the picture early in 2013.

Movement on Get It While You Can has been slow since Adams first became involved, giving time for another, long-gestating Joplin biopic to pick up steam. In July of this year, it was announced that Tony-winning actress Nina Arianda would make her big screen leading lady debut as the musician in a film simply titled Janis. Under the eye of director Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), the film is a passion project of producer Peter Newman, who has spent 12 years developing the film (including nabbing exclusive use of 21 of Joplin’s best known songs).

Which film will hit theaters first? Hollywood.com reached out to producers for word on both films, but updates were unavailable. If history is to be believed, there's a chance we'll see both films released in a short span of months — and with Daniels and Durkin at the helm of their respective films, Get It While You Can and Janis should be different enough to capture Joplin in two unique ways.

It's A Bad Day To Be Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong @ThePakiChat.Net News

Those yellow bracelets, which once symbolized so much hope and optimism, are now tinged by the slowly decaying coat of controversy. Fifteen years after founding the LiveStrong foundation for cancer research and five years after becoming its chairman, Lance Armstrong has stepped down from his post. Armstrong cites the lifelong ban on cycling placed on him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and his stripped Tour de France titles as the reason for his resignation.

In a statement on the LiveStrong website Armstrong said, "I have had the great honor of serving as this foundation’s chairman for the last five years and its mission and success are my top priorities. Today therefore, to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship." LiveStrong's Vice Chairman, Jeff Garvey, will take over for Armstrong.

Armstrong continued, "My family and I have devoted our lives to the work of the foundation and that will not change. We plan to continue our service to the foundation and the cancer community. We will remain active advocates for cancer survivors and engaged supporters of the fight against cancer. And we look forward to an exciting weekend of activities marking the 15th anniversary of the foundation’s creation."

As news of Armstrong's resignation broke on Wednesday, Nike also announced that they have terminated Armstrong's endorsement contract. Nike has released a statement to CNN that reads, "Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him."

While Nike originally stood by Armstrong when his titles were revoked in August, the USADA's new reports have caused the brand to change its course of action. "Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner," Nike says.

In addition to ending Armstrong's endorsement contract, Nike will be removing the cyclist's name from its fitness center in Oregon, CNN reports. However, Nike, which has been a longtime supporter of LiveStrong, says that ending its relationship with Armstrong will have no effect on its support for the foundation.

David Hasselhoff Visits School In Wales

The former Baywatch star, who has been dating Welsh beauty Hayley Roberts since they met on the set of U.K. show Britain's Got Talent last year (11), thrilled youngsters at Pengeulan Primary School in the town of Mountain Ash when he turned up at the facility unannounced.

He encouraged pupils to focus on their studies before posing for pictures with the kids and staff members.

In a post on his Twitter.com page, he writes, "Awesome staff teachers and The Children of the future!! Thank you it was an honor!"

A message on the school's website reads, "The pupils of Pengeulan had a wonderful surprise when David Hasselhoff unexpectantly 'popped in' for a visit when travelling through South Wales.

"He talked with the pupils, answered their questions and encouraged them that it was 'Cool to be in School'. He finished off the visit having photographs with pupils and staff."

Liam Neeson Had No Idea He Was Shooting Batman Film

Famously secretive moviemaker Christopher Nolan refused to give the Irish actor any information about the 2005 film he was shooting and Neeson now admits he was more than a little frustrated.

He tells WENN, "He takes secrecy to another extreme. I didn't know I was in Batman Begins. I went and shot a scene for two hours with Christian. It was a set and Christian was tied up.

"I said, 'Chris, what am I doing?' and he said, 'Well, just walk forward and say the lines, walk back and that'll be it really.' I said, 'What the f**k, tell me the story!' He said, 'Well, I'd prefer not to actually.'

"I mean, 'OK, don't mind me, I'm just an actor'."

But Neeson was thrilled when he saw the fight sequence in the film and admits it was among the highlights of his career: "I loved the fight I had with Christian in Batman Begins because we were on this real glacier in Iceland and we had these glacier wranglers, believe it or not, who would ask us to get off if it started moving.

"You could hear the sound of this thing moving as it moved maybe a quarter of an inch and the guy would say, 'OK, you can go on again now.'"

Thor Star Jaimie Alexander Hospitalised In London

The actress, who plays Lady Sif in the film franchise, took to Twitter.com on Tuesday (25Sep12) to tell fans she had injured her leg and was in hospital, but didn't go into details.

She wrote, "I sustained a pretty horrible injury. I'm lucky I'm not paralyzed. Thank you (with all of my heart) to those who've looked after me."

Alexander later added, "Already in recovery mode and my spirits are high. I'll be back kicking a** as Lady Sif in no time! It can only get better from here on out!

"Meds (medication) are kicking in. Awesome funny nurses here at the hospital. Physio tomorrow. All good."

Aronofsky's 'Noah' Reveals Snakes On An Ark, No Sam Jackson - PIC

According to the highly reputable Reptile Database, there are over 3,315 species of snakes. That means when Noah brought two of every breed on board his blessed Ark, there were 6,630 of those critters slithering across the deck floor. Hopefully they weren't on their shedding periods.

Any worry that director Darren Aronofsky may not stay faithful to the massive amount of cold blooded passengers that would theoretically been stored on the boat in his epic Noah has now been molted away, thanks to the first image of inside the legendary boat courtesy of cinematographer Matthew Libatique's Twitpic.

"Pre lighting on the holiest day of the year," tweeted Libatique, showing off a high contrast photo full of snakes (and a single alligator — where is its significant other?!). The film follows the first official shot of Russell Crowe has the titular Biblical figure, who is rumored to be more of a blockbuster action hero in Aronofsky's revisionist interpretation of the classic story.

Check out the picture below and watch ThePakiChat.Net for more pics that surface from set. Noah, which stars Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Saoirse Ronan, Douglas Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Anthony Hopkins, hits theaters March 28th, 2014.

Andy Williams, "Moon River" Singer, Dies

Andy Williams, the singer renowned for his version of "Moon River," has passed away at the age of 84, People reports. A performer since the ripe age of 11, when he and his brothers formed a quartet, Williams stayed a force in the industry up until his death Tuesday in Branson, Mo., following a battle with bladder cancer.

After spending years performing in nightclubs with his brothers, Williams first gained recognition as a solo act while appearing on late night talk show Tonight Starring Steve Allen, a regular stint that eventually led to a recording contract and a hit cover single, "Canadian Sunset." Williams had hit his sweet spot with cover tunes — following the success of "Canadian Sunset," the crooner released a bevy of other cover singles that hit with fans, including his Billboard-topping version of Charlie Gracie's "Butterfly."

But Williams won most recognition for his rendition of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's "Moon River," a song first made famous by its appearance in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The singer performed his version at the 1962 Academy Awards — where the song won the Oscar — and it has been associated with Williams ever since, despite the fact that the song was never released as one of Williams' singles.

Soon thereafter, Williams found himself flirting with the music business after gaining ownership of recordings by Lenny Welch, The Chordettes, and other acts, a move that led to his formation of Barnaby Records. From there, the singer became a force in the industry, earning 17 gold albums (and three platinum albums) and launching a career on the small screen, where he hosted NBC's The Andy Williams Show from 1962 to 1971. The singer felt comfortable on television, hosting Christmas specials until 1974 and presiding over seven Grammy Award telecasts. And Williams was rewarded for his television work — the singer won three Emmys for The Andy Williams Show.

Following his massive success, it's no wonder Williams was encouraged to open a theater in the entertainment capital of the world, Branson, Mo. Named for his famous song, The Moon River Theater opened in 1992, and continues to thrive today. (Williams himself performed at the theater six nights a week, until health struggles forced him to cut back.) And, hopefully, will continue to be an attraction even following the singer's passing — after all, for musicians to play in Williams' house? Why, that would send them, well, over the moon.
