Competing biopics aren't rare in Hollywood. Truman Capote was all the rage in 2005 (with Philip Seymour Hoffman's Capote stealing the thunder from the Toby Jones-led Infamous), this Fall sees two Alfred Hitchcock films (Hitchcock and HBO's The Girl), the battle for pictures based on the life of porn star legend Linda Lovelace is in full swing.
Now we have another famous figure to add to the mix: Janis Joplin.
Rumors that Amy Adams would lead a Joplin biopic have been swirling about since 2010, but an announcement from The Hollywood Reporter solidifies her involvement as well as reports that Lee Daniels (Precious, The Paperboy) is attached to direct. Currently titled Get It While You Can, details are scarce on whether the biopic of the 1960s rocker would sweep her entire career or concentrate on a particular moment, but a script has been written and cameras could be rolling on the picture early in 2013.
Movement on Get It While You Can has been slow since Adams first became involved, giving time for another, long-gestating Joplin biopic to pick up steam. In July of this year, it was announced that Tony-winning actress Nina Arianda would make her big screen leading lady debut as the musician in a film simply titled Janis. Under the eye of director Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), the film is a passion project of producer Peter Newman, who has spent 12 years developing the film (including nabbing exclusive use of 21 of Joplin’s best known songs).
Which film will hit theaters first? Hollywood.com reached out to producers for word on both films, but updates were unavailable. If history is to be believed, there's a chance we'll see both films released in a short span of months — and with Daniels and Durkin at the helm of their respective films, Get It While You Can and Janis should be different enough to capture Joplin in two unique ways.
